The stationary bike produces abnormal noises during pedaling.
Step 1 – Check for Vibration Through the Pedals
Action: When the noise occurs, check if you can feel vibration through your feet.
Diagnosis:
-
Vibration felt → Likely pedal issue
Reinstall the pedals.
Optionally, place a piece of paper or wrap several layers of PTFE (Teflon) tape around the pedal threads before reinstalling.
Noise may be caused by slight gaps between the pedal and crank threads.
No vibration → Proceed to Step 2
Step 2 – Compare Left and Right Pedals
Action: Pedal alternately with left and right foot, and observe whether the noise occurs on both sides.
Diagnosis:
-
Noise only on one side:
“Clunking” → Pedal issue
Dull “thud” → Gap between crank and pedal
Sharp “thud” → Bottom bracket issue
Noise on both sides → Proceed to Step 3
Step 3 – Check Noise Variation with Resistance
Action: Pedal at different resistance levels and observe if the noise changes.
Diagnosis:
Noise unchanged with resistance → Likely bottom bracket issue
Noise increases with higher resistance → Likely pedal or crank issue
Step 4 – Rotate Crank by Hand
Action: Turn the crank manually and listen for noise.
Diagnosis:
Noise present when turning by hand → Likely bottom bracket issue
Recommended Actions
Reinstall pedals properly.
Place a paper piece or wrap PTFE tape around pedal threads, then retest.
